'Peebles for Pleasure' is what the locals say and it's easy to see why! Peebles offers plenty of ways to enjoy the great outdoors with a variety of leisure activities. Golf, fishing, mountain biking and walking are popular pursuits, with the Forests of Tweeddale and the challenging Southern Upland Way easily accessible. For mountain bikers of all levels, Glentress Forest offers the first courses in Scotland designed by enthusiasts using a colour-graded scheme like ski runs. For more experienced bikers, the Red Bull Downhill Course at nearby Innerleithen is renowned for fast and very technical riding.
Innerleithen is also home to Traquair, Scotland's oldest continually inhabited house and is surrounded by the scenic hills and forest of the Tweed Valley, also St. Ronan's Well Interpretative Centre depicts the era of the last century when the town was famed as a spa. Robert Smail's Printing Works give a fascinating insight into the printing processes of the past.
The neighbouring village of Broughton has a well-known gallery, as well as the John Buchan Centre, chronicling the famous writer, soldier and politician's life. Keep an eye open, too, for Neidpath Castle at its lofty vantage point over the River Tweed on the edge of Peebles.
Gardening fans are well placed to enjoy a visit to Dawyck, one of the National Botanic Gardens of Scotland, at Stobo, or Kailzie Gardens with its formal walled garden, stocked trout pond and 18-hole putting green. Peebles' spacious High Street offers interesting boutiques and welcoming tearooms for a spot of shopping, then round off the day with a visit to Peebles Eastgate Theatre; opened in 2004 with a varied year-round selection of theatre, music and art exhibitions.
Eddleston is in the heart of beautiful wooded countryside and West Linton, a historic conservation village, is situated at the foot of the Pentland Hills. South West is Tweedsmuir, 1600 feet above sea level on an old coaching route. The church spire is an unmistakable landmark in the remote and peaceful upland area, once the haunt of Covenanters. The River Tweed rises in these hills and a lay-by and sculpture on A701 mark the site.
